JANE AUSTEN AT 250: a Birthday Celebration
Illustrated Talk by Victoria Hinshaw, lifetime Janeite
Tuesday, December 16, 6:30PM
Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775, in the village of Steventon, Hampshire, England. Two-hundred- fifty years later,  Jane Austen remains one of the world’s most popular and esteemed authors. Why? This event is cosponsored by (Jane Austen Society of North America) JASNA-Wisconsin.

Author Victoria Hinshaw, a Life Member of the Jane Austen Society of North America  (JASNA),  will present an illustrated program on the life, work, and amazing reputation of this beloved writer. Austen's stories are the source of numerous films, television series, exhibitions, scholarly conferences, and hundreds of fan fiction works, not to mention bobble-heads, comic books, and a brand of Austen gin. Tourists flock to the modest homes in which she lived, and hundreds of devotees gather in Regency costumes in ballrooms and lecture halls to worship her six novels, published letters, juvenilia, and unfinished fragments and to perform the traditional forms of country dances she enjoyed. Despite the fact she died at age 41 in 1817 and published only four books in her short lifetime, her work is studied and revered all over the world. How indeed did this admiration grow from the days when she anonymously published novels "By a Lady" to our era's icon of literature, fashion, and culture.

Environmental Awareness Book Club from the Whitefish Bay Garden Club
Save the Date for:
Monday, January 26,  6-7:30PM
The Environmental Awareness Book Club is led by members of the Whitefish Bay Garden Club in partnership with the Whitefish Bay Public Library which will meet once a quarter. This month we're reading The Serviceberry: abundance and reciprocity in the natural world by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Registration is encouraged for planning but not required.

Light snacks will be provided; organizers request that people bring their own water bottle.

About the book: "In Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer reflects on the practice of harvesting serviceberries and the concept of reciprocity central to Indigenous wisdom. She contrasts this with the dominant economic system rooted in scarcity, competition, and resource hoarding. Kimmerer highlights how the serviceberry tree, by sharing its abundance with its ecosystem, embodies a model of interdependence and mutual support. This ethic of reciprocity, she argues, shows us that true wealth arises from relationships, not self-sufficiency, and encourages us to reimagine our values in a way that nurtures both people and the planet."-- Provided by publisher.
