Friends of the Whitefish Bay
Public Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library book sale happens the first full weekend in May & November at the Library: 5420 N. Marlborough Drive.
On Friday, our usual Friends Night – for Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library -  will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. If you’re not a Friend, you can join Friday night and attend the Friday night sale for as little as $15 annually.

On Saturday, our hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. And on Sunday, join us from noon to 3 p.m. for our popular bag sale. Fill a bag for $7. We supply the bags!
Our semi-annual sales help raise money to supplement the wide range of activities at the Library including reading programs, computer equipment purchases, guest speakers, furniture and much more.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, we have a tremendous selection of gently-used books, DVDs and CDs. Books are sorted fiction versus non-fiction. Most fiction offerings are alphabetized by author. Non-fiction books are for sale by category. So if you have a favorite author, or are looking for just the right book, you’ll find it all at the Book Sale.

Reminder: We accept all major credit cards, checks and cash.

What is an Edible Book?
An edible book is an item that looks like a book, puns on a title, refers to a character, or just has something to do with books. The only rule is that entries must be made from edible ingredients. Edible Book Festivals have been held all over the world, and there is array of examples found online. The festival started as a celebration to commemorate the birthday of French gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), famous for his book Physiologie du goût, a witty meditation on food.

What can I make as an entry for the festival?
Need some inspiration for an entry? Make your very own edible book depicting your favorite book character. You can also take a cherished title and turn it into a pun (think “Much Ado About Muffins”). Or just make an entry that looks like a book or book cover. Still in need of inspiration? Search the web for “edible book festival.” Stop by the library and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Holiday Closings

The library will be closed on Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26 for the Memorial Day holiday. This also begins our summer hours in which the library is closed on Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The Spring Diaper Drive, sponsored by Landmark Credit Union with support from the Milwaukee County Federated Library System, is focused on collecting diapers, wipes, and financial donations to stock United Way's Diaper Bank Hubs.

For many local families, purchasing diapers and wipes is a real financial burden. Yet we know that access to diapers is critical to the health and wellbeing of children. Support local families who may be struggling by dropping off diapers and wipes at Landmark Credit Union branches or right here at the library.

Tea Time Book Club
Wednesday, May 21, 2PM
Our Tea Time Book Club meets once a month is led by Library Director Nyama Reed. This month we're reading Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space by Adam Higginbotham. Tea Time Book Club offers in-person meetings at the Library in the 2nd floor Program Room. Copies of Challenger are available to pickup at the Adult Services Desk.

About the book: "On January 28, 1996, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart of the Atlantic Ocean, killing all seven people on board. Like disaster is a defining moment in twentieth-century history--yet the full story of what happened, and why, has never been told. It's a compelling tale of ambition and ingenuity undermined by political cynicism and cost-cutting in the interests of burnishing national prestige. A masterful blend of riveting human drama and fascinating and absorbing science, Challenger brings to life and even more complex and astonishing story than we remember"-- Back cover.

Thanks for the Memoirs Book Club
Thursday, June 12, 10AM
Thanks for the Memoirs Book Club will focus on memoirs from authors representing a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences. We will meet on the 2nd Thursday at 10am, every other month, starting in February.

This month we're reading Heavy: An American Memoir by Kiese Laymon. Selected as One of the Best Books of the 21st Century by The New York Times*

Discussions will be facilitated by Mary Sussman, who previously led Shakespeare and Company (2003-2005), dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare; and League Café, dedicated to books about racial equity (2018-2023).

About the book: "Laymon writes eloquently and honestly about the physical manifestations of violence, grief, trauma, and abuse on his own body. He writes of his own eating disorder and gambling addiction as well as similar issues that run throughout his family. Through self-exploration, storytelling, and honest conversation with family and friends, Heavy seeks to bring what has been hidden into the light and to reckon with all of its myriad sources, from the most intimate--a mother-child relationship--to the most universal--a society that has undervalued and abused black bodies for centuries"--,Provided by publisher.

State Park Pass Available May 1
