Winter Reading Program

Our Winter Reading Program is back! Adults can participate through Beanstack, while kids and teens can stop by the Youth Services Desk to get started. The program starts on January 20 and runs through February 28.  

Adults
Sign up online beginning January 20 through Beanstack. For every 2 hours that you read, you'll earn a ticket (up to 50). Write reviews for the books you read and earn additional tickets. Also earn tickets for completing some tasks, such as following the library on social media. Use your tickets to enter into a drawing for a gift card from some area businesses. This program is made possible by Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library

Teens
Teens can participate by stopping by the Youth Services desk to pick up a paper log beginning January 15. Read whatever you'd like (audiobooks count too!) This program is made possible by Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library

Tiny Art Show
Sponsored by Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library

The Tiny Art Show is a month-long community art exhibition. The twist? All art must be on a 4” x 4” canvas! Kids, teens, and adults are invited to participate. Kids must be 5K or older to participate.
 
Pick up an art kit starting on January13 at either the Youth Services or Adult Services Desk. The tiny art will then be on display throughout the month of February.
 
Kit includes: Canvas, paint, and paint brushes.
 
Guidelines
  • All art work must be on the provided 4” x 4” canvas and able to be displayed on an easel.
  • Other than food, all materials are welcome to be used in the creation of your art.
  • Artwork and the titles of the artwork must be appropriate for all ages.
  • Library staff reserves the right to reject any art that does not follow these guidelines.
  • Art must be dropped off at the library by January 31 to be included in the exhibit.
  • Art may be collected after the exhibition beginning March 1.

Safetalk Suicide Prevention Training- We Can Save Lives Tour
Sunday, January 5, 12-4PM
Please join us for a Safetalk suicide prevention training tour across Wisconsin in memory of Alderman Jonathan Brostoff OBM.
 
What is Safetalk? Safetalk is a 4-hour training that prepares you to become a trained suicide-alert helper.
 
Led by Levi Stein
Executive Director, The Friendship Circle of WI
Levi is a licensed SafeTALK Suicide Prevention trainer. He is extremely passionate about Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and has provided training to thousands of people throughout Wisconsin.

Holocaust Program
Wednesday, January 8, 1-2PM
Generously Hosted by the Whitefish Bay Woman's Club
Join us for a poignant and educational Holocaust program featuring Edith Pump and Samantha Abramson. This program is an opportunity to learn about the Holocaust through historical context and firsthand testimony, ensuring that the lessons of this dark period are never forgotten.

Program Details:
Personal Story by Edith Pump:
Edith Herszenson Pump will share her deeply personal experience as a Holocaust survivor. Born in hiding in Uzbekistan during World War II, Edith is the daughter of Mendel and Ellen (Chia) Herszenson, who fled their homeland of Poland to escape Nazi persecution. Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the human spirit's capacity to endure.
 
Presentation by Samantha Abramson:
"Intro to the Holocaust and Contemporary Applications"
Samantha Abramson is the Executive Director of The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC). HERC is committed to fostering a life-affirming society rooted in the values of tolerance, diversity, dignity, and respect for all. HERC provides Holocaust education to both students and adults, emphasizing the lessons history has taught us and their relevance in today's world.

Onyx Storm- Fourth Wing Release Party

Milwaukee Poet Laureate 2025 nominee Kavon Cortez Jones will share poetry & spoken word selections.
 
Artist Melanie Ariens will lead all ages silk screening of NOH8 posters for you to make & take home.
 
Milwaukee Poet Laureate emeritus Susan Firer will uplift the works of Black women poets Wanda Coleman & Lucille Clifton & share some of her own winter pieces.
 
The Whitefish Bay High School Black Student Union will read excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings.

Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library Writing Contest

Friends are once again offering Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library Writing Contest. This will be the 12th straight year for the contest, which includes submission categories for short story (1,000 words or less), memoir (1,000 words or less), and poetry (200 words or less). The contest is open to anyone 16 and up. Submissions will be accepted from January 13 - February 10 and are limited to one entry per category per person. Cash prizes will be awarded in spring. Please include a cover page on your entry with the following: Name, address, email, phone number, entry date, and category.

Tea Time Book Club

The Tea Time Book Club will meet at the Whitefish Bay Public Library in 2025 on the third Wednesday of each month, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, in the Second Floor Program Room with Library Director Nyama Reed. Note new time and day of the week. This month we're reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
