Book of the Month

Skip the long wait-list and pick up popular titles today with our Lucky Day Book of the Month! Each month we choose a popular book and purchase extra copies that are available for immediate checkout. This program is generously funded and made possible by the Friends of the Greendale Public Library. The Lucky Day book for this month is The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny.

"The 19th mystery in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Armand Gamache series. Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning. That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF, the nineteenth novel in Louise Penny's #1 New York Times-bestselling series. A missing coat, an intruder alarm, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list--and then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching. Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, his son-in-law and second in command, and Inspector Isabelle Lacoste can only trust each other, as old friends begin to act like enemies, and long-time enemies appear to be friends. Determined to track down the threat before it becomes a reality, their pursuit takes them across Québec and across borders. Their hunt grows increasingly desperate, even frantic, as the enormity of the creature they're chasing becomes clear. If they fail the devastating consequences would reach into the largest of cities and the smallest of villages. Including Three Pines"--,Provided by publisher.

A Message from the Director,

Brian Van Klooster

Happy New Year to all of you, Library Lovers!

December and January are the months for annual recaps and reviews. Here I will share my own, a recap-of-recaps of a handful of Best Books of 2024 lists. All of these reviews are sourced from magazines or newspapers that the Greendale Library subscribes to.

I share this because many people don’t realize how often “best books” are mentioned outside the ubiquitous New York Times Bestseller ranking. Many average magazines and news sources review what they believe to be the best books published in the year. By looking over these lists readers can gain exposure to books they may otherwise not hear of. The books that these publications applaud are usually influenced by their parent publication’s editorial or subject matter preferences. Meaning, if you’re a fan of a specific magazine or newspaper, it’s likely you’ll find a book listed in their reviews that will appeal to you. The best part about these recaps is that, though there may be one or two that mention a book that’s also on the NYT bestseller list, chances are you’ll find unique titles here that are just as good or better. One can only take so many weeks of seeing Baldacci and Patterson before it’s time to find something different!

Here's to a new year of reading discoveries.

Sincerely,
