Adult Programs

OCPL Poetry Contest

April 1st-30th

Celebrate National Poetry Month by participating in OCPL's very first Poetry Contest! There are three age categories:
 
  • Middle School (ages 11-13)
  • High School (ages 14-18)
  • Adult (18+)

Poetry must be submitted in-person at the library's Children's or Adult Service Desks during the month of April. Entries will be judged by members of the community. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for each category, as well as a chance to be published in the Oak Creek Current magazine and on OCPL's website. Winners will be announced in early May.

Are you looking for one-on-one technology assistance? On Thursdays from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., bring in your device for a 30-minute appointment with a librarian. Library laptops will be available for general computer assistance.

Registration for each Thursday opens the Monday prior. You may only register for one 30 minute session per Thursday; walk-in appointments are not available.

April 4th - 25th

 

6:00 - 8:30 p.m

Participants will learn intermediate concepts in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher such as: using tables and editing headers/footers, using conditional values and creating charts/graphs, animating slides and using timing, as well as creating shapes and inserting building blocks. 

 

This is a 4-week class. Registration is required.

Spring Has Sprung: Adoptable Dogs Meet and Greet

Multi-purpose Room

Apr. 6th, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Come say "Hi!" to adoptable dogs at Woof Gang Rescue's Meet and Greet! Celebrate spring with a scavenger hunt and some themed treats.

Home Buyer's Workshop

Multi-purpose Room

April 9th, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m

If the idea of buying a home is on your mind, don't miss out on this workshop tailored just for you! A local realtor and a mortgage broker will share their valuable insights to help you feel at ease in today's housing market. Bring your questions, and they'll leverage their years of experience to provide expert answers. Refreshments will be offered.

Friends of the Library Meeting

Tower Room

Apr. 10th, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

For more than 20 years, the Friends of the Oak Creek Public Library has served as an independent organization of persons and businesses interested in assisting the library in developing programs, encouraging gifts, promoting knowledge and providing a channel for individuals and organizations to express ideas and make suggestions for library use and services.

Our meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month (except for July and August) at 6:00 p.m., typically held in the Tower Room.

Library Board Meeting

Apr. 11th, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

The Oak Creek Public Library Board of Trustees serves as the governing body of the Oak Creek Public Library. The Board is composed of seven members, each appointed by the Mayor for staggered three-year terms. The board usually meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Civic Center. Some meetings may be held virtually.

Sea Life of the Pacific (1880-1910)

Apr. 23rd, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Ahmad, a Curators' Distinguished Teaching Professor Emerita of American history at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, will be giving a presentation about sea life around the Pacific Islands during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Registration is recommended.

Smokey the Bear Reading Challenge

Apr. 1st-30th

Help Smokey celebrate his 80th birthday by learning how to prevent wildfires and help the environment. Read 3 books on wildfire prevention or the environment and earn 4 activity badges to complete the challenge and earn your sticker, while supplies last! Get started by visiting the Oak Creek Public Library's Beanstack site.

Music and Movement

Multi-purpose Room

Mondays, Apr. 8th - May 13th

6:30 - 7:00 p.m.

This 30-minute Story Time is geared toward children ages 2-5, with an adult (siblings welcome). We'll be incorporating music and movement into all books, songs, and rhymes.

This 15-20-minute Story Time is geared toward children ages birth to 24 months, with an adult (siblings welcome). It features short stories, songs, and lapsit rhymes that foster early literacy and will be followed by a play time.

YA Section (2nd floor)

Write a review of a book made into a movie OR a movie made into a book. You may enter multiple times, but each entry should be for a different title. The entry box will be on display in the YA section throughout the month of April. Enter to win a movie gift card!

Story Time Room

Work as a team to create, experiment and learn through hands-on activities. We will investigate the law of gravity by doing various activities and experiments.

Financial Literacy Night

Join us for a night of finance fun for the whole family! Learn the basics of how to be smart with money in a fun and family-friendly way from a financial professional from Educator's Credit Union.
